Rockdale Downtown Association for 2013


The Auto & Bike Show is held annually on the first Saturday in March in the downtown sections of Ackerman Street, the CNB parking lots and Milam Street. The entry Fee is $20.00 and registration is scheduled from 08:00 AM to 10:00 AM. The show starts at 10:00 AM and awards are presented at 02:30 PM. Several classes will be awarded along with door prizes, 50-50 Raffel, and food booths. The show is free to the public and all parking is free. More info click Car Show. To give you an idea of what were trying to accomplish, here are a few photos from past events that our membership has participated in.

Annual Tejas Art and Book Festival

This highly successful annual event that began in March of 2007, is a joint effort of the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce, the Rockdale Historical Society, the Rockdale Downtown Association, the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library, and the Kay Theatre foundation that attracts thousands of visitors to the Rockdale area.

The following press release was sent out by the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce promoting the second annual event in 2008:

2nd Annual Tejas Art & Book Festival Rockdale, TX

Wonderful FAMILY outing, lots of entertainment for all!

Performances include DARREN PETERSON and Chicken Dog at 11:30 a.m., ROOSTER MORRIS at 1:00 p.m. and SARA HICKMAN at 3:20 p.m. All performances will be across the street from the library.

AUTHORS scheduled to read are: Elizabeth Crook, Tony Diaz, John FoxJohn, Don Graham, Christine Granados, Bill Harper, Bill Holman, Joaquin Jackson, Bruce Jordan, Amie Stone King, John Lee, Diana Lopez, Rooster Morris, Rollo Newsom, Anne Sutherland and Mariah Wade.

ARTISTS who will be selling their work downtown: Bernice Coleman,Roger Felps, Margaret Grimmer, Debbie Holland, Gail Kincaid, Rita Kirkman, McBrides, yellowbirdstudio.com, Carol Meiske, DK Nichols, Lisa Nicks, Sharla Wilson, and Diana and Denise Steinhagan.

The Classic Car Show, sponsored by the Rockdale Downtown Association as part of the Annual Tejas Art and Book Festival in March of each year always draws a crowd.

The Classic Car Show is just filled with breath-taking examples of restored classic cars and motorcycles.

The ANNUAL TEJAS ART AND BOOK FESTIVAL--CATCH THE SPIRIT IN ROCKDALE, TEXAS is definitely one of the best planned and executed festivals in Texas and grows better each year.

What Other Kinds of Things do we Do???

If you look around downtown Rockdale, you won't have to look far see results of the city beautification activities sponsored by the Rockdale Downtown Association. For example, the beautiful banners, the fresly painted benches, planters and handicap rails in front of the downtown businesses are all Rockdale Downtown Association activities. You'll also find Rockdale Downtown Association members active in other Rockdale associations which helps promote good communications and inter-group support. The association sponsors marketing seminars to help local businesses and donates their hard earned cash to other worthwhile events like the Kay Theatre Fun Run and Kay Theatre Free Movie Nights.

This association plays an active role in helping local businesses and Rockdale citizens to CATCH THE SPIRIT IN ROCKDALE, TEXAS.

Promoting Rockdale at Every Opportunity

Joy Graham, local historian, business owner and secretary of the Rockdale Downtown Association announced that Rockdale's Train Depot Restoration project was in the running for the major award at the annual Texas Downtown Associations Annual Revitalization Conference co-sponsored by the Texas Historical Commission, The Main Street Program and the Texas Downtown Association.

"The 1906 International and Great Northern Depot is a finalist in the Texas Downtown Associations Annual Revitalization Conference to be held in Tyler, Texas November 3 – 6, 2009. The Texas Downtown Association calls for nominations each year to be judged and awarded state recognition at their Annual Conference.

The Rockdale Downtown Association prepared the nomination application for TDA’s “best restoration” award. Rockdale Historical Society and Rockdale Chamber of Commerce were involved in helping to develop the application. The other two finalists in this competition are: Nepker Building located in Bastrop and The Whitmire & Whitmire Insurance building in Wichita Falls.

Rockdale is excited to have reached this level in the competition. Winners in this category will be announced at the TDA’s Annual Conference. The theme for this year’s conference is Texas Downtown Revitalization is “Tools for Downtown Development”. This conference is co-sponsored by Texas Historical Commission, The Main Street Program and TDA."
